Rolling Stones Contract Documents Relating To Allen Klein Signed Court Copies
A large and comprehensive archive of contractual documents relating to court proceedings surrounding The Rolling Stones’ management and their dealings with Allen Klein. Allen Klein was one of the most powerful and controversial music managers of the 1960s and early 1970s. He rose to prominence through his work with The Beatles at a critical point in their career, negotiating significantly improved royalty rates and gaining unprecedented control over their business affairs. The Beatles are widely regarded as the most influential band in popular music history, redefining songwriting, recording, and the global music industry itself. Klein’s involvement with them, and later with The Rolling Stones, places these documents firmly at the centre of music industry history. The archive includes an “Allen Klein discovery” section comprising 42 individual points, detailing contractual and legal material disclosed during court proceedings. These papers offer rare insight into the legal strategies, disputes, and business mechanics behind one of the most high-profile management relationships of the era. In addition, there is a substantial selection of contracts arranged across three separate stapled groups, covering agreements between Decca Records, The Rolling Stones, and Andrew Loog Oldham. Oldham was the band’s original manager and producer, instrumental in shaping their early image and sound, and a key figure in launching their career. His role was pivotal in positioning The Rolling Stones as a defining force of British rock music. The documents appear to be solicitors’ copies, as all bear reproduced signatures rather than original hand-signed examples. They are copies of the original contracts, created during the same period as the agreements themselves. Several pages show pencil amendments made by the same hand, likely that of a lawyer or solicitor, adding further authenticity and context to the legal process. See my other listing of Mick’s personal statement from the Redlands bust, which came from the same estate/sale. Overall, this collection provides an incredibly insightful and detailed look into the contracts, negotiations, and inner workings behind one of the greatest and most successful bands in the world, and the powerful figures who helped shape – and challenge – their business affairs.
